Cain Vineyard

Mark as Favorite

In 1985, Cain Vineyard was established by Joyce and Jerry Cain. The winery is famous for its Cain Five blend of the traditional red Bordeaux varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.

Region: Napa Valley

In 1980, Jerry and Joyce Cain bought part an idyllic piece of land in the western hills of Napa Valley. They began planting the land with grapes in 1981. Five years later, Jim and Nancy Meadlock partnered with the Cains. The Meadlocks are currently the sole owners of the winery.

Cain Vineyard is located on a stunning piece of property in the Spring Mountain AVA above St Helena. Vines are planted on terraces that have been cut into the thin, hillside soil. 81 acres are planted between 1,400 and 2,100 feet above sea level. Grapes are harvested at their optimal ripeness and separate vineyard lots are fermented in French oak.

Most of the grapes used in the Cain Five blend are from the estate vineyards. However, Jim and Nancy Meadlock also source a limited amount of grapes from other properties for balance. Subtle blending has been critical to Cain Vineyard’s success. Unlike some other wines, Cain Five is assembled before it undergoes long term barrel aging. This gives the wine a cohesiveness that many other Bordeaux blends lack.

Along with Cain Five, the winery also makes Cain Concept and Cain Cuvee. Cain Concept is a big, age worthy wine, and Cain Cuvee has smoother tannins and was made to drink with food on release. Al three of these wines are made primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon.
