Jon and Kathy were optimistic about their first wine, but were still hesitant to call it a success. But after having the top winemakers in the area try their wines, they realized that they had a talent for making wine. The foundation was laid, and in 2002, they started their own winery.
Because the majority of their experience lied in vineyard management, Jon and Cathy knew that they needed to bring in another person to reach their full potential. This person was South African native J. C. van Staden.
Winemaker van Staden’s experience producing wine on two continents helped in his transition to producing wine from Lodi. His transition was smooth and he is a large part of the success that Grands Amis has achieved.
Since their debut release, Grands Amis has added a few wines to their repertoire. They now produce a Cabernet Sauvignon, Barbera, Syrah, Carignane, Petite Sirah and a Port. All of these wines embody the characteristics of Lodi’s terroir.
