The Lucas Winery is a quality-minded producer that specializes in Zinfandel and Chardonnay. In the vineyard, the grapevines are managed very meticulously, and yields are quite low at about 2.5 to 3 tons per acre.
A new, gravity flow winery was completed in 2000. This allows winemaker David Lucas and his team to agitate the grape must as little as possible, and lets the fruit’s varietal characteristics shine through. Intervention is eschewed as much as possible during the process, fitting with winery’s philosophy, “to create wines that reflect the personality of the vineyard.”
Lucas Winery’s 2004 Chardonnay was picked by hand on cool mornings, retaining the grapes’ integrity and acidity. After a gentle pressing, one-half of the must was transferred to French oak barrels for fermentation and aging.
The 2001 Zinstar was produces from 70 year old vines. This wine has velvety tannins with dark fruit flavors of boysenberries and blackberries. It has a bit of spice and vanilla on the palate from being barrel aged.
