George and Elsa Vare are the owners of Vare Vineyards. They make about 500 cases of wine a year; mainly Pinot Grigio but also some Ribolla Gialla as well as 2 white blends called Bianco and Bianco Sulle Bucce, (on the skins).

Vare Vineyards specializes in producing white Italian varietals. Only natural yeasts are used during the fermentation process. The Pinot Grigio, Ribolla Gialla, and Bianco are not malolactically fermented in order to keep them crisp and refreshing. Bianco Sulle Bucce is a fuller-bodied wine and does undergo malolactic fermentation.

George Vare has a great deal of experience in many aspects of the wine industry. He has a degree in Liberal Arts from Williams College, a degree in Electrical Engineering from Drexel Institute, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

From 1972 to 1979, Mr. Vare was the President of Geyser Peak Winery. He significantly increased production, profitability, and quality at Geyser Peak. A master at business development, Mr. Vare embarked on a series of winery start-ups between 1979 and 1991. He made each profitable before selling it and starting another.

In 1991, Vare was hired as President of the Henry Wine Group, a major wholesaler. In 1994, he founded Silverado Partners with 3 other individuals. 2 years later, Silverado Partners and Texas Pacific Group bought Beringer from Nestle. In 1997, Beringer went public, and followed by its acquisition by Foster’s Brewing Group in 2000.

In 1996, Vare also found time to establish Luna Vineyards as well as plant 7 acres of Pinot Grigio around his home. He has since grafted some of these vines to Ribolla Gialla and Tocai Friuliano.
