Loam
The role of Loam in Vineyard Soil
There can be different degrees of influences of these three materials depending on the loam type. These soils are generally more fertile and denser than sandy soils, but less fertile and less dense than clay.
They are often classified based on being mixed with sand, silt or clay. Sandy loam is relatively coarse and porous. Silt and clay loam are smooth and uniform. They both have a less gritty and more powdery texture than sandy loam.
Silt and Clay loams retain water effectively and are more difficult to plough. They can also inhibit roots from growing exceptionally large. These soils often also typically have more nutrients.
