St Helena Terrain, Soil and Grape Growing

South of town, the Bench is considerably west of Highway 29. Because the Napa Valley narrows considerably through St Helena, the Bench is adjacent to Highway 29 north of town.

Beringer Vineyards sits on the Northern Bench and is the oldest continually run winery in the Napa Valley. Their Reserve Cab sources some of its grapes from this part of St Helena.

Soils on the valley floor are primarily alluvial and sedimentary. They are composed of sandstone and mudstone with a bit of a volcanic influence present in alluvial fans. Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc are widely planted in this part of the AVA. Buehler Vineyards makes a very good, medium bodied Zinfandel with grapes from the eastern foothills.
