In 1979, Joe Martin and Lloyd Canton established St Francis Winery in Sonoma Valley. At the time, Joe and Emma Martin had been selling grapes from Behler Ranch Vineyard for 8 years.

St Francis Winery was thoroughly modernized in 1999 and the tasting room was renovated in 2001. The winery is named after St Francis of Assisi, a Franciscan. During the 18th century, Franciscan Missionaries were the first Europeans to plant grapes in California.

The production team at St Francis consists of Director of Winemaking Tom Mackey, Winemaker Sally Johnson, Associate Winemaker and Cellarmaster Dennis Borell, Barrel Master Derek Borell, and Assistant Winemaker Katie Madigan.

Current releases include the 2004 Sonoma County Chardonnay, 2004 Behler Vineyard Reserve Chardonnay, 2002 Sonoma County Old Vines Zinfandel, 2002 Pagani Vineyard Reserve Zinfandel, 2002 Sonoma County Merlot, 2001 Behler Vineyard Reserve Merlot, 2002 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon, 2001 Nuns Canyon Vineyard Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, 2003 Sonoma County Syrah, and 2001 Claret (blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandel).

The winery owns 4 estate properties: Behler Vineyard (64 acres of Merlot and 24 acres of Chardonnay), Wild Oak Vineyard (110 acres of Merlot, 65 acres of Syrah, and 22 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon), Nuns Canyon Vineyard (65 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, 34 acres of Merlot, 15 acres of Zinfandel, and 3 acres of Sangiovese), and Lagomarsino Vineyard (130 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 acres of Chardonnay, and 15 acres of Cabernet Franc).

I've recently been enjoying St. Francis Sonoma Red, 2004. A bold red blend. Wonder why it isn't listed here (in St. Francis wines). Anyone else familiar with this red? -- Marvie
