Estate Labels
The use of Estate on United States Wine Labels
In order for a winery to use either of these designations on their labels, 100% of the fruit must come from vineyards that are either owned or controlled by the winery. The winery and vineyards must also be located in a specific AVA to legally use these terms.
In addition to using grapes that were grown on the estate, all of the winemaking must take place on the property. This includes crushing, fermenting, clarifying, blending, aging and bottling.
Wines labeled “Estate Bottled” or “Grown, Produced and Bottled” are generally of high quality, but this is not always the case. In most cases, it is reasonable to assume that these wines are made in more limited quantities, especially if the winery produces a higher volume of wine that is not labeled “Estate Bottled.”
