DESCRIPTION OF WINE TOUR

Wine enthusiasts who wish to try wine produced in the Gilroy area will want to plan and visit on the third weekend of the month. That weekend is when Fernwood Cellars opens its tasting room to the public. This winery is situated on property called “Redwood Retreat” that has been in the same family for five generations, tracing history back to the California Gold Rush. Enjoy wine produced in the Santa Cruz Mountains while sitting among the redwoods. Next, take Hecker Pass Highway, marvel at the spectacular vistas and stop at Fortino Winery. Fortino Winery features Carignan created from 80-year-old vines.

Fortino also hosts a number of special events like music and weddings. Hecker Pass Winery is not very far down the road. This winery prides itself on Italian-style varietals, based on a winemaking family tradition that is rooted in Calabria, Italy. Gilroy area visitors may wish to stop for a bite to eat. Several county and state parks in the area provide spots for a picnic lunch. Restaurants, such as the Mt. Madonna Inn, also are available. Then, take time to visit one more winery. Thomas Kruse Winery is located just off Highway 101. Mr. Kruse seeks to create an inviting atmosphere with affordable wines. The estate is home to many domestic and wild animals. All of these wineries offer refunds on tasting fees when the visitor purchases a bottle.
